Text Box: A question that you may be facing is how much to budget for your safety awareness incentive program. Though there is no single answer or set amount that will apply to every situation, there are some guidelines that can be helpful.

Many companies set up specific budgets that are based on a portion of the funds they anticipate saving by reducing the expenses related to accidents and injuries, basically the program is set up to pay for itself. Acknowledging that there is no way to calculate the cost of an accident that does not occur, safety achievement is often measured by comparing to the experiences of previous years or indexes within an industry classification.

Cash almost always becomes an entitlement and has little perceived value, as a dollar is a dollar no matter how you look at it, in fact it’s less than a dollar when you factor in taxes and other expenses related to employee income. Typically, cash is spent on daily necessities and forgotten. Gift cards and certificates are treated and taxed as cash and have the same effect. They are usually redeemed for routine purchases, applied to credit card balances or exchanged for cash. Also on the minus side the merchant is generally remembered as the provider of the award received not the employer you gave the award.

Awards must have value to the recipient if they are to be an incentive for behavioral change and provide motivation and recognition for a job well done. There are ways to add value without adding cost. Catalog merchandise based programs provide tangible awards with both personal and trophy value that no other award vehicle can provide.
