The frustration comes in when companies invest in one of these programs then try to make it fit. Careful consideration should be given when evaluating and selecting an effective incentive program. Ask yourself questions like:

“Does it conform to our safety culture?”

“Will it enhance the existing safety program?”

“Is the budget fixable and is it easy to implement and administer?”

“Will it be easy for our participants to understand?”

“Does the program’s message go home with the associates?” A really effective incentive program raises awareness both on and off the job and it gets your associate’s family involved.

“Can the program be customized to get the message across?” Be sure your associates will identify the program and its message with your company and not with the company selling you the incentives.

“Does the program reward associates on a short-term basis?” Short-term incentives help discourage any tendency your associates may have to under-report accidents and injuries. The associates can get right back into the program after a disqualifying event occurs. Don’t rely too heavily on peer pressure.
